How to Read Your Electrical Panel Like an Electrician
Your panel is the table of contents for your home's entire electrical system. Learn to read it and you'll know what your house can handle, what past work was done right, and what an electrician is talking about before they hand you a quote. Here's how a pro reads a panel — top to bottom.
Start at the Main Breaker
At the top (usually) sits the main breaker — the service disconnect. The number stamped on the handle is your service size: 100, 150, or 200 amps in most homes. That number is the ceiling for everything downstream. Planning a hot tub, an EV charger, a shop subpanel, or electric heat? This number decides whether your service can absorb it or whether a service upgrade comes first.
Breaker Size Must Match Wire Size
Every breaker protects the wire attached to it — not the appliance. That's the single most misunderstood fact in residential electrical. The pairings for common copper branch circuits:
- 15A breaker → 14-gauge copper
- 20A breaker → 12-gauge copper
- 30A breaker → 10-gauge copper
A 20A breaker feeding 14-gauge wire is a fire hazard hiding in plain sight: the wire can overheat long before the breaker sees a problem. This is the classic signature of a previous owner who "fixed" a nuisance-tripping breaker by installing a bigger one. If you spot it, that circuit needs correction — not someday, now.
Spotting Double-Taps
A double-tap is two conductors landed under a single breaker terminal designed for one. It's one of the most common findings in home inspections. A few breaker designs are listed to accept two conductors — but most are not, and a loose double-tap means heat, arcing, and intermittent problems that are miserable to chase. The fix is straightforward for an electrician: a tandem breaker where permitted, a pigtail, or a panel that isn't out of space.
Tandem Breakers and Panel Limits
Tandem ("cheater") breakers put two circuits in one slot. They're legal only in panels designed for them, and only in the slot positions the panel is listed for — the panel label and the numbering system tell you which. A panel stuffed with tandems in every position is a sign someone kept adding circuits without asking whether the panel, or the service, could support them.
AFCI and GFCI: Know Which Breakers You're Looking At
Breakers with a TEST button are AFCI, GFCI, or dual-function. GFCI protects people from shock by detecting current leaking off its intended path. AFCI protects the structure from fire by detecting arcing. Modern code wants most of a house on one, the other, or both. If your panel is all plain breakers, you're not automatically in violation — but every remodel and circuit extension pulls those areas up to current requirements, and that belongs in your project budget.
Read the Panel Schedule — Then Fix It
The card on the door is supposed to say what every breaker feeds. In most homes it's incomplete, wrong, or blank. Spend an hour with a helper and a plug-in lamp: flip breakers one at a time and map every receptacle, light, and appliance. A correct, legible panel schedule is required by code for a reason — in a flooded basement or a burning-smell-at-2-a.m. situation, you don't want to be guessing which breaker kills what.
Red Flags That Mean "Call a Pro Now"
- Burn marks, melted insulation, or a hot or buzzing breaker
- Rust or water staining inside the panel — water and bus bars are a lethal combination
- Certain legacy panel brands with documented failure histories (ask your inspector or electrician)
- Aluminum branch-circuit wiring on 15A and 20A circuits without proper terminations
